Founded by Dr. Jónas Kristjánsson as a Health Institute in Hveragerði, Iceland, Heilsustofnun – Rehabilitation and Health Clinic has, over seven decades, evolved into a renowned centre for rehabilitation and wellness. The Clinic today combines modern medicine, herbal medicine, nutrition, and a holistic approach to health.
At the heart of Heilsustofnun’s mission is medical rehabilitation, designed for those recovering from illness, injury, or long-term health conditions. Treatments are individually tailored and integrate medical, psychological, social, and technical approaches to help patients regain independence and improve quality of life. Programs address a wide range of needs, from heart conditions, arthritis, and cancer recovery to stress management and dietary concerns.
Alongside rehabilitation, the Clinic also offers wellness retreats open to all, where guests can enjoy nourishing organic meals, spa facilities, exercise programs, and the restorative power of a calm environment. The Clinic’s philosophy extends beyond treatment to a lifestyle approach – it promotes responsibility for one’s own health, encourages daily activity, offers professional consultations, and provides a supportive setting where healing is both structured and gentle.
For its anniversary, Heilsustofnun organised a festive programme, held during Hveragerði’s Blooming Days, featuring musical performances, a farmers’ market, guided walks, storytelling and a special exhibition honouring the Clinic’s founder, Dr. Jónas Kristjánsson. The occasion also marked the 20th anniversary of Hollvinir, the Clinic’s circle of friends, adding to the spirit of gratitude and continuity.
