From 2–3 June 2025, Slovenia had the honor of hosting the ESPA Board Meeting, held at the renowned Dolenjske Toplice Spa, part of the Terme Krka group. This meeting marked a significant transition within the Slovenian Spas Association as long-standing director Iztok Altbauer officially stepped down, handing over his role to Ms. Saša Požar. Board members extended a warm welcome to the new General Manager of the Slovenian Spas.
Although retired, Mr. Altbauer continues to contribute to ESPA as Marketing Communications Specialist and was instrumental in organizing this successful gathering. It is great news for our Association to have such an experienced professional on our team.
A Showcase of Slovenian Wellness Excellence
The program, designed by Terme Krka’s team – led by Matej Jordan and Director Jože Berus – highlighted the region’s natural wellbeing offerings. Set along the scenic Krka River, the event included a tour of the Medico-Health Department, morning breathing exercises, an introduction to Nordic walking route, a session with the in-house nutritionist, and their renowned preventive detox programmes. The event was also on invitation from the Slovenian Tourist Board.
Advancing Healthy Life Coaching on a European Level
During the meeting, board members reviewed recent initiatives and strategic developments. Ms. Csilla Mezosi, Secretary General of ESPA, emphasized the association’s growing role in EU-level advocacy, its involvement in European funding calls, and its representation at international congresses and fairs.
Notably, new pilot projects are underway, including the European Capital of Health Destination and the development of Satellite Hubs for Balneology Research and Environmental Studies. These hubs aim to become centers for scientific research, innovation, and sustainability in spa and health sector. The initiatives have received support from the European Commission’s REGIO department to move into their next development phase. The other main topic was the optimization and update of the ESPA quality seals, certifications. The Board is thankful, that the medical group is getting more international and the next congress is with a cooperation of ISMH.
Looking Ahead
Board members acknowledged ESPA’s increasing visibility and impact in promoting healthy lifestyles and the evidence-based benefits of thermal waters and natural medicine in preventive care.
The meeting concluded with a celebratory lunch at the prestigious Otočec Castle, hosted by Mr. Berus and attended by Ms. Karmen Novarlič of the Slovenian Tourist Board. Nestled on an island in the Krka River, Otočec Castle is a Michelin Guide-listed luxury hotel and restaurant, celebrated for its commitment to fresh, local, and seasonal cuisine. Guests enjoyed a tour of the castle’s herbal gardens and an engaging conversation with the head gardener.
